Herne has about 156,000 inhabitants, it is the geographical center of the metropolis Ruhr and has a lot to offer: apart from the second largest funfair in Germany – the Cranger Kirmes – there are as well many cultural and sports activities in Herne, like for example the LWL Museum of Archaeology, the Flottmannhallen and the Gysenberg park.

Education and Research

Even within the field of education and research Herne comes to the fore. The project office of SolarBioproducts Ruhr (Sbp), located at the Innovation and Business Incubation center (IGZ) since 2015, is another step forward to the scientific location Herne. Sbp connects research and economy, converts new ideas and results into innovations and aims to establish a scientific competence center for algal biotechnology in Herne on a long-term basis.

SolarBioproducts Ruhr

The project was initiated by the Business Development Agency Herne and the leader of the Photobiotechnology group of Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB), Prof. Dr. Thomas Happe. Located at the IGZ in Herne-Baukau it aims to intensify research projects, develop innovative ideas and bring together different fields of study. On a long-term basis a scientific institute is to be established.

Wirtschaftsförderung Herne

Due to the good traffic connection to the RUB via the so-called campus line U35, Herne is the ideal location for an institution. Research institutions have an important contribution for profiling the metropolis Ruhr as science location. And Herne is to be part of it. The aim is to bring research, development and education of young scientists into this part of the Ruhr area. The association PRO|transfer, which promotes the transfer from research into economy, supports the project SolarBioproducts Ruhr with its target achievement.
